Stories of Sanctuary

It was a wonderful evening. And such a simple idea. We invited seven people seeking sanctuary (asylum seekers) to tell their stories in front of an invited audience. It was very moving and very successful. The stories, some on video and some in live interview form, took in subjects as diverse and shocking as dawn raids and sex trafficking.

I was privileged to interview Massoume, from Iran, who proudly waved photos of her two children after their graduation. She has still not been granted sanctuary, despite 9 years of struggle. She gives so much to the local community.

Abdul, a reporter and academic from Pakistan brought some headlines from newspapers that attacked those seeking sanctuary. He was a great speaker and really inspired me.

We will host further meetings as part of City of Sanctuary, as it is so important for those going through these horrors to share their stories.
