Tempting offers

A tempting offer came my way today, the chance to look at a new direction in terms of work. Immediately I felt a huge sense of loss. Bradford has been such an extraordinarily good experience for me, that the thought of change is shocking. I know so many beautiful people. So many people have so deeply affected me.

My wife expressed a similar love of Bradford, something I never quite expected from her. There is something about this marvellous city that has the power to transform us and help us to be the best we can be - if we let it.

It would be very hard to leave, and even after 20 years, I am still discovering new things that thrill and please me! i don't know how I will deal with a tempting job offer, but I know that Bradford will be in my veins forever.

The Gym

I joined a gym. The first time in 39 years. Some good friends took me on Tuesday, and I have been everyday since. I never thought this would happen to me. I have avoided these things for so long, fearing ridicule. But it is great! Sauna's, Steam rooms, a pool! And my kids get in Free!

But I really go for the same reason most people really go for - I enjoyed the company - I have had so many wonderful and friendly conversations with so many people over the last three days. I may never quite get the tummy I've always desired, but I'm sure that life will be better as a result of my membership!

Stories of Sanctuary

It was a wonderful evening. And such a simple idea. We invited seven people seeking sanctuary (asylum seekers) to tell their stories in front of an invited audience. It was very moving and very successful. The stories, some on video and some in live interview form, took in subjects as diverse and shocking as dawn raids and sex trafficking.

I was privileged to interview Massoume, from Iran, who proudly waved photos of her two children after their graduation. She has still not been granted sanctuary, despite 9 years of struggle. She gives so much to the local community.

Abdul, a reporter and academic from Pakistan brought some headlines from newspapers that attacked those seeking sanctuary. He was a great speaker and really inspired me.

We will host further meetings as part of City of Sanctuary, as it is so important for those going through these horrors to share their stories.
